While the boys were outside having fun with the chain saw, Derek’s mom Cathy and I found a project to keep up busy inside. After breakfast there was a casual discussion in the dining room in our PJ’s which started out like this…
And quickly turned into this!
Cathy was a HUGE help with this not-so-fun project and you can see at this point we finally decided to move the furniture out of the room and actually prepare to do work in there (maybe that should have been step one, ha!).
With our sleeves rolled up and wallpaper coming off it was time to get rid of the valance so we called the boys in from outside and they took care of it for us (the valances and drapes were not my style but they were def custom-made a few decades ago!).
Luckily we didn’t have to use the steamer much longer and were able to just pull the remaining wallpaper off in pretty much full sheets which surprised us but I think its because of the plaster walls which is smoother material than drywall. Here’s a shot of everyone cleaning up the paper and taping off the chair rail before scraping off glue.
To remove the glue I applied DIF to the walls which after the fact I realized didn’t help with the glue removal step and really just made more of a sticky mess.
Cathy and I tackled removing the glue from the walls (using water, sponges and scrapers) and at the end of the weekend this wall was the only one with glue still left on it. Yay for no more 50’s wallpaper!!
After one more night of removing the glue myself, cleaning off all the remaining residue, and getting rid of those saloon doors we were one step closer to paint!! It was soooo much more open with the valance and curtains gone. But first, more wall repair…
