The kitchen was also fully wall papered and since my experience with the dining room I was much more proficient in removing it. It came off in strips and I just used warm water and elbow grease to get the glue off. Guess we had bacon for breakfast that day!!
We also removed the wood valance above the sink to make the space feel current. Nothing like finding wallpaper under wallpaper!
Since I only used a sponge to remove the glue we thought wall repair would be pretty minimal but the wall paper was just covering up and old issue because there was a decent repair needed on the far wall. This shot is after mudding went on.
We also decided to get rid of one of the upper cabinets and try some open shelving. I was planning on painting the walls green but that lovely lime green color wasn’t exactly what I was going for. You can see I had painted the trim too!
I wanted a hint of color in kitchen against the original plan of off white and grey (now kinda blueish) cabinets and I chose a very subtle, soft sage green. Since I only wanted a hint of color I played around and took out 25% of the color from the paint, which was Turtle Dove by BEHR, to make it just a hair lighter.
When it first went up I thought it was almost too much like white but the green tone really does come through (and compared to the lime green it would look much whiter!). I toyed around with using some type of wall paper above the cabinets but just decided painting the wall paper (its was stuck to plywood and wouldn’t come off) was easiest and also the cleanest look. Looks sooo much better with that valance gone and fresh paint!
Here’s a shot of us installing the Lack floating shelves from IKEA using Mace’s laser level (peanut butter jar not included) that he bought to do the garage siding (which has become a very handy tool for both of us to use!).
The kitchen looked and felt much more welcoming but now what to do with that blank wall…
