Basement Bathroom Demo & Other Progress

The main goal during weeks 16 & 17 of our basement reno was getting ready for drywall by wrapping up some smaller pieces of the project. I think I mentioned earlier that we decided last minute to go ahead a demo the 1/2 bath down there so everything would be fresh and new. Here are some shots of before and during demo.

Now that we had the ceiling open you can see the plumbing in the master bathroom above it (which we’re currently renovating 4 years later). What you can’t really tell was that the ceiling height in there was actually lower than the main room. We didn’t really want to have it lower but with the plumbing above you are kinda stuck with that constraint. You can see in the pics below we did capture a little bit more head room by having the bulk head come down just below the main waste line instead of a couple inches below it like the original framing.

So we decided to build a small bulk head to conceal the plumbing and have the rest of the ceiling at a higher height. This would also constrain us in the upstairs bathroom with where we could move things in the future (which we discussed at the time) so we considered that when deciding on how wide to make the bulk head. We actually have a plumber coming tomorrow to look at the master bathroom so fingers crossed we don’t run into any issues. Here are some shots of the new bulk head with the smaller pot lights installed.

We also had to get our new basement windows framed up and ready for drywall and here are some after shots of that. Pretty sure Mace was going around with a can of spray foam insulation and filling in any nook and cranny he could find.

We also fed electrical to the 2 support posts… have I mentioned before that Mace loves power??

Next up was adding insulation in the ceiling for sound proofing.

And here I am all suited up and ready to insulate!

It took us a few hours and was a bit tedious when you had to thread it through tight spots or around lights, but once we got into a rhythm it wasn’t too bad… but still not fun work. This was super exciting to finish because it meant we were ready for drywall!
