So last week we announced we had mold in the basement. This week I can say there is no more mold in our house, yay!! Once Mace found the mold there was no holding him back from taking care of it. Watching him investigate, peel back the layers of the problem, and then contain it while we worked on a solution was really something to see. Not that he was excited about the problem but the fact that he is now familiar with every square inch of this house and has touched almost every surface brings this man joy like no other I tell ya! I swear he’s jumping up and clicking his heels inside! A true project manager, he wants intimate knowledge of his job site and all the issues on it and doesn’t rest until he’s made it right and “taken over” a space. I can also say that he is sleeping much easier (and hopefully no more sinus infections) now that he has complete control over our house (aka he beat the house, not that he’s competitive or anything!). And I am very happy we’ve removed anything harmful to us from the house as well. As I mentioned, we decided to bring in professionals for this job and it was quite a treat for us to not have to do the work for once! First they had to set-up the containment area and negative air pressure before they did demo.
Then they could start removing the wall panels, carpet, and 2 layers of asbestos tile underneath it. They did say we probably didn’t need to remove all the paneling (and the mold didn’t really need to be handled professionally) but we decided to move forward with all of it so all the walls would be the same going forward.
Then they put all the contaminated materials in special containers to remove all the waste and by the end of the day they had filled their entire truck with our basement materials.
There was a crew of 5 – 6 guys working a full day (which would have taken us how many hours and weekends, totally worth it!) and by the end of it we were left with a clean, mold free basement. The only thing they didn’t have time for that day was demoing the ceiling so we left up the containment and will do that ourselves.
They also scrubbed the floor joists and floor on the… original unfinished side (guess its a totally unfinished basement now!). We plan on using dry lock on the walls and leaving it this way for a while, just to keep an eye on the trouble area and make sure the regrading efforts solved the issue before we put drywall back. The challenge for me will be keeping Mace focused on the (fingers-crossed) up coming kitchen remodel in a few months instead of the basement. All of this because he just had to check on a plumbing issue on the other side of the room… 😉
