Bathroom Shelf Insert

Somewhere in between finishing the last details and passing inspection on the deck Mace was putting his carpentry efforts towards my projects as well!  First up was filling the hole where the medicine cabinet was with a new shelf insert.

There was a lot of pre-work and measuring ahead of time to make sure the shelf unit would be the right depth and cover the edges of the plaster and not overlap the tile. First up was building the frame for the shelf and turning a pile of wood into something (Mace’s favorite thing!).

During the building process Mace was consulting me on what the reveal should look like, which is where the trim is either flush or set back from the frame.  We decided to have it set back and here Mace is starting to put the trim on the frame.

We had to determine the set back distance for the trim (1/8″) before all the trim was cut, otherwise there wouldn’t be nicely mitered corners.  Mace dry fit everything before gluing and nailing it in place.  We also decided to have the bottom shelf have no reveal so it is completely smooth.

Next up was putting in the shelves.  There was a lot of discussion on the proper spacing because of course I wanted to make sure that there was flexibility to put different sized items in there and here we are during the decision process. Lots of holes to putty and sand before it would be paint ready (which I did of course)!

An artist always signs his work and if future home owners tear out our work they’ll know we were here!

And the true test, does it fit?!?

The answer is yes of course, I mean Mace built it not me!! Here’s the final result painted and installed! It’s so much better than the medicine cabinet. And my stuff fits perfectly!
