I know with everything going on with the deck it probably didn’t look like I was doing much but I had some projects of my own I was working on. So while the landing was getting finished I was rolling up my sleeves inside. I always disliked the ceiling fan in the dining room and now that the other major changes were done in the room I was able to start making some more decorating plans for this room. Long term I want a new fixture when we re-do the kitchen (we’re still undecided on if it will be a fan or just a light, the fan has some practical purposes of keeping it cooler in the afternoon) but for now we were looking for a cheap fix. Here’s the before.

Solution: spray paint. I landed on a bronze hammered color for the motor and blades and a matte nickel color for the light sockets. We were going to take the fan down but because of how it was put together it was being a pain and I was impatient we just left it installed and I decided I would work with it in place. So I taped off the base against the ceiling and put large pieces of plastic underneath to protect the ceiling from over spray. I also covered the floors to protect them.

I decided to spray the light sockets first and I also covered the sockets so paint didn’t go inside them.

After they dried I took a plastic bag and covered them so I could spray the motor. I also sprayed the blades and the screws that held the glass globes in place.

After I took all the plastic down it was looking much better and I was successful in not ruining the ceiling paint job!

I was able to find some frosted glass globes at a 2nd hand store for $3 a piece that also made it feel more current, but I had plans for the original globes!

And after the blades were back in place it was no longer the eye sore it was before. Not a bad update for $17 and a few hours of my time!
