We had come along way since we started 35 days ago and were almost finished the master bedroom update and new closet design. Flashback to the before shot.
We had completed demo and building the closet structure, repairing and creating new closet walls, laying new and refinishing the old hardwood flooring, added trim, and painted the whole room. But there were a few details still left to complete before the room was move in ready so here was the plan for those last 2 days:
Install and paint valance in closet (will hide door hardware)
Install all the shoe moldings
Install new thermostat
Put on all outlet and switch plates
Install new light fixture
Install closet organizer
To hide the hardware that the door operates on you have to install a valance. The hardware adds extra height to the closet opening and all this was calculated ahead of time when Mace planned the closet structure. Here’s the install.
To make the seam between the valence and the door jamb seamless Mace applied bondo. But apparently it was too old and instead of hardening like it should it stayed tacky which meant he had to remove it and start all over (what, you thought the final phase would go smoothly!).
After that issue was squared away and the surface was paint ready Mace made a contribution to the painting effort. I took over shortly after so he could…
Install the base shoe molding throughout the room. Here’s a shot inside the closet, looks like the duct line had always been there.
The new thermostat and switch plate also got installed.
Along with the outlet covers and new light fixture (which I also got at wayfair). If felt like a real room!!
Time for the icing on the cake! Mace read the directions on how to install the organizer but basically he had to determine the right height so our clothes weren’t hanging too high or low, then run a cleat along the back of the closet and screw into studs.
Then he had to go about getting all these sections in place and securing them by himself (I was at work and he took the day off, points for him!!).
And then I got my Carrie Bradshaw Sex in the City moment of “He built me a closet for my shoes”!!!
There were a few things we didn’t get done before move-in day (hanging the doors and installing closet lighting) but the room was ready and we were SO proud of ourselves and what we had accomplished over the last 37 days, it was A LOT and we did it ourselves. First major home renovation project completed together, yay!!! Take a moment to take it in… give a high five… and then cue running around to move furniture, make beds, and clean because we only had a few hours before my parents showed up!
