Front Yard Edging and Plantings

Heading back outside and picking up on our front walkway update, in addition to regrading the front of the house and resetting the walkway we gave the front planter bed some attention.  This project was all me as I dug out everything and moved it all by myself, go me!  I didn’t want to buy a whole new planter bed so I was working with the existing shrubs and just trying to fill in around them and make it more interesting.

So I added some fox glove and gardenia’s and added coral bells and grasses along the edge.

The liriope border was also a little sparse so I divided some of those plants and replanted them.  And Kobe was there keeping me company!

Where we removed the azela I planted a lavender plant, an ornamental grass, and lambs ear.  the lavender is supposed to be about 4ft tall so should be taller than the grass eventually, I wasn’t expecting the grass to get so tall! There are still some blank spaces closer to the evergreen bush and by the front door that I need to fill in and haven’t figured out exactly what I want yet but this will be a project for the fall.  I also need to move the peonies this fall and will further divide the liriope to fill in the gaps in the border.

Another part of the clean up was cutting in the border edge (expanding in some areas and adding rounded beds) which I did with a hand edger (not electric) to give it more definition.  You can also see we needed to fill in some areas with grass seed because the bed got too big.

I also planted lambs ear and ornamental grasses at the corner of the house and added some fresh mulch (which we were disappointed with how quickly it seemed to gray) and the front yard was feeling more inviting.  It had come a looonng way from when we moved in!!
