Garage Insulation & Drywall

Now that we had an official garage we needed to start finishing out the space.  We could have left it uninsulated and dry walled but Mace really wanted it to be a finished space (he spends a lot of time in there!).  First up was insulating the walls, help from friends is always welcome!

And what else is there to do but have a garage party when you’re done!  This was probably the best bday present Mace could ask for, getting full use out of the garage!

The window also needed to be properly insulated.  Here we have used spray foam insulation and then cut out the excess when it dried.

For the walls that were against the house we hung plywood so there was something solid to screw into when we hung cabinets.

These walls also had to be fire-proof which required 5/8″ drywall (instead of 1/2″) to meet code.  This side of the garage posed the biggest challenge for hanging drywall because we had to blend the brick section into the door/wall area. First Mace squared up the brick portion to make it flush.

Then he used adhesive, tap con screws, and a hammer drill to secure the drywall to the brick wall and also hung the upper section of drywall.

Creating a corner in this little shelf area had to happen because of the recessed section.

You can see the drywall wasn’t square so he had to scrape it down until it was flush.  A drywall corner bead still needed to be installed (that’s what makes the corners sharp and prevents damage).  The window also needed corner bead before mudding.

The rest of the garage was more straight forward to hang but it still takes time, especially when you have to cut several pieces around doorways.

I got some experience hanging drywall too!!

And after all the drywall was hung the seams got a tape coat and screws got mud.  After getting the garage door up it took us about 45 more days to get to this point, so almost 3 1/2 months total from the beginning.  It would stay like this for another 2 months before we did any more work in there.
