Now that we had all the deck boards installed and the deck stairs mostly completed it was time to start on the railings! Mace was finally able to get these out of the basement and was looking forward to doing something different from laying deck boards. First step, get out your tools, layout the railing design, and cut out where the posts are going. This is obviously a very important step that looks easy but the last thing you’d want to do is cut a hole in the wrong place and ruin the beautiful boarder work.
Step two, install the posts. They can be installed on the outside or inside of the deck, the inside is more complicated but also more sturdy. It took about 7 hours for Mace to install all the posts and it was a lot of work on the underside of the deck to secure the posts to the structure. Most important, use your shims to make sure they are straight!! And secure them tightly of course!
Step 3, put the post sleeves on. Mace made sure these were all pushed towards the front so there would be enough space to run the lighting wire later (always thinking ahead this guy!).
Step 4, start installing the railing kits and make sure that the spacing of the balusters are even between the posts. Mace was able to get this far on the railings in 6 hours and wrapped up the remaining front post kits over the next night or two. It was so exciting to see the railings go up and the deck really start to look more finished. We opted to upgrade to the black, round, and thinner balusters instead of the thicker white square balusters and it was def the right choice!! They visually blend into the backyard and make it feel like you’re vision into the yard isn’t obstructed. This was the 8 1/2 week mark.
