Painted Backsplash

With the kitchen cabinets and walls painted it was time to focus on the backsplash since changing the counter tops wasn’t going to happen during this refresh.  The off white backsplash really blended into the off white counter tops and now the off white cabinets and made the room kind of boring.  And don’t forget the off white appliances.

So I took inventory of the paint on hand and decided to try and mix my own custom color (guess I wanted to try again after mixing the office furniture color!).

back splash update 1

Here’s the backsplash with the first color I mixed (and I scuffed up the tile a bit to have the paint stick better before I painted it). An improvement but it was still a little boring with all the solid colors… and when I stepped back it was a very similar color scheme to the dining room which I didn’t want.

So I started playing with different combo’s of accent colors and also painting the border white.

And here’s the result after I landed on another custom color (more of a green tone but not sage like the walls) and the first color became the accent tile. I also liked the white border because I it “cleaned the palate” from the wall green to the backsplash green since they had different undertones. Three coats of clear coat to seal it from moisture and it was done!

updated backsplash

In truth I broke DIY rule #1 (patience) and used regular polyurethane to seal it. I knew I shouldn’t have because it has a yellow color to it but I didn’t it anyway because I was rushing. The result was that it yellowed over time and I had to repaint and reseal it a few months later. We’ll see how it holds up since a full kitchen reno is a year away (if we’re lucky) but for now its a major improvement!!
