Peeling Back The Layers

Continuing with our kitchen reno prep, we decided to investigate the floor in our kitchen over the weekend.  In conversations months ago we talked about doing in-floor heating under new tile when we removed the baseboard heaters.  In recent conversations we were thinking if there were hardwoods under the tile then we would refinish them and do heat under the cabinets with toe kick heaters.  Based on the transition between the kitchen and dining room we knew there were layers of something underneath the tile.

So we started by pulling up a tile underneath the refrigerator and discovered the old linoleum that matched the lime green walls under the wall paper!!

Then we cut out the linoleum to discover the next layer of linoleum which would have been original to the house.

I had my fingers crossed that oak hardwoods were under the very first layer!

Alas it was a layer of plywood (frowny face). But we learned that there are basically 2 subfloors underneath the tile, back in the 50’s they did this to bring the floor level with the hardwood when the laid the linoleum. Which means if we decide to run hardwoods it shouldn’t be too difficult since the first subfloor will (aka should) be level with the subfloor under our dining room hardwood floors.  Now we just have to evaluate the costs and decide which way we want to go.
