How to Make the Most of Your Upcoming Interior Design Consultation

The first step in our design process is the initial consultation meeting. This is when we get to learn more about you, your family, your lifestyle, and the specific goals and vision of the project.

The very beginning of a project is often one of the most exciting times (with the exception of the completion of the project, of course) because energy levels are high, and envisioning how your life will be transformed is so much fun!

This can also be an overwhelming time because the possibilities and options seem endless. This overwhelm can result in trying to do too many different things or a constant change of direction and indecision. The most successful projects are the ones that set clear priorities and goals from the beginning as these are often referenced as the project progresses.

Here are my top suggestions for making the most of a consultation.

Task #1: Gather & Share Inspirational Images

We can all go down the rabbit hole of looking through beautiful images for inspiration and seeing all the different solutions for a space- it’s what makes design fun!

I always ask clients to pull together some images of spaces that inspire them. You don't have to love everything in the picture but if there is just something about it that draws you to it, then save it. You can create a Pinterest board, text them, or give us hard copies if you found something in a magazine. I also find it helpful to save a couple images of things you don't like when you come across them.

As designers, it’s our job to be detectives about your style preference, so more information is always beneficial!

Task #2: Determine Your Specific Project Goals

You've probably been thinking about your project for a while, but you may not have taken the time to actually write anything down. A couple days before the consultation, I recommend gathering with any other decision makers and taking a few minutes to jot down the project goals.

Being specific about what you want to accomplish, priority and wish list items, and your desired budget are all important pieces to discuss at the start of a project. Often times, the list is longer than we expected or there may be conflicts, and we can work through those more easily once we're aware of them.

Task #3: Prepare to Be Flexible & Keep an Open Mind

Home projects are incredibly exciting, but they can also be incredibly stressful at times. I can honestly say that none of the home projects I've personally been part of in the past are completely stress free.

A client’s ability to be flexible, keep an open mind, and maintain a positive outlook is essential to managing bumps in the road. During the initial consultation, I help prepare and manage your project expectations and any potential challenges we could face. There will inevitably be something we can't plan for, but I am here to help you navigate the unexpected. Don't worry, you'll still be thrilled with the end result and many changes end up working out for the better!

A Productive, Successful Design Consultation

It is always appreciated if we're able to spend the design consultation time with minimal interruptions, so planning for childcare or blocking off your work calendar for dedicated time is very beneficial.

Another tip would be to create a binder, folder, email file, or any other preferred system to keep items related to the project together. This is super helpful to make sure you're saving any details that might be handed to you, notes written on pieces of paper, business cards, etc. so you they are ready if and when you need them.

Ready to schedule your home consultation if you don't already have one on the books? Let's chat. We can't wait to meet you!

Warmest Regards,

Carrie
