When we first moved into our new house updating our mudroom was at the top of my list and I thought we would tackle it within a few months. Well as plans go, that did not happen and it quickly got put on the back burner so other projects or neccessary updates took
center stage. There was a shower behind bi-fold doors we didn't need and an awkward
closet that wasn't that functional so after a few months it was clear the space just wasn't
going to work for us and we had to do some type of mini-update before I went crazy
from the mess.
So we finally got around to ripping out the shower and found out that space used to be a
half bathroom. Now that we have the pool I can understand why a bathroom close to it
was very practical. Anyway, the old shower is now a basic closet with a rod, shelf, and
bins for the kids shoes and while it isn't the beautiful space I would like, the fact that it
functions SO MUCH BETTER for our family is life changing. So while I continue to
daydream about how my future space will look and function even better, I thought I'd
share some gorgeous inspiration along with four tips to incorporate organizing any mudroom

Tip 1: Reassess the Rooms Purpose & Survey Available Space
A mudroom is usually a multi-functional space but you should still evaluate the main
purpose of the room and space to make sure it can realistically handle everything you
need it to do. If its a small space to begin with, trying to cram everything into is not
going to work long term and you may need to evaluate other spaces in your home as
well. To maximize small spaces make sure you're utilizing all the vertical wall space
you can by adding shelves, cubbies, or wall hooks where needed.

Tip 2: Purchase Purposeful Storage & Establish Easy
Systems
One of the most important things you need to do is to take inventory of everything that
needs to be stored in different zones. This is also a great time to purge items you no
longer need. Next you're able to purchase appropriate storage solutions for all of those
items because you know what size and type of storage is needed to make the space
functional for you. In order to keep the space organized your family can make a plan of
putting items in the right spot (labels or some type of visual are always helpful for little
ones) or donating and throwing items away if a container starts to overflow.

Tip 3: Make a Plan for Moisture Control & Swap Seasonal Items
Mudrooms are notoriously damp because of all the wet clothing and footwear that gets
left in them. To ensure your space stays clear of musty smells having a spare utility
towel is always helpful for clean up. A durable or washable throw rug will help make the
space look fresh year round. As the seasons change its always a good idea to swap
out those items and either donate or store them elsewhere depending on your needs.

Tip 4: Style the Newly Organized Space & Enjoy its
Beauty
Adding a few thoughtful but practical details will help make your newly organized
mudroom stand out and put a smile on your face every time you're in there. A bench for
putting on shoes can be both attractive and functional. Lighting a scented candle is
both welcoming and can hide any minor odors (hello sports gear!). Or you can hang a
cute piece of art or family picture or flowers to add personality to the room. Whatever
you choose make sure it reflects who you are and how you want to feel in the space.
Getting your mudroom organized is no small feat but its well worth it when support your lifestyle instead of working against you. Clutter and dysfunctional spaces can
be key drivers to being frustrated with your home but these tips will get you on your way
to more functional living.
