While all the other finishing details were happening with the slider we also had to lay new flooring where we removed the baseboard heater. Here’s a shot of what we had to repair on both sides of the room.
Back when we were framing the opening you can also see where the frame a flooring stopped and where we needed to add new flooring and a threshold.
And here you can see we laid in the new flooring (left over from when we did the floors in the master). You can also tell by the foam in the picture that the new flooring had to go down BEFORE the trim got installed.
I was feeling the pressure of time during this stage of the project and said we should just do the staining and finishing later but Mace felt it was important to complete it then (and he was right that it would make a better finished product) so he took the lead and sanded down the new boards (took time but not a ridiculous amount) and we took turns with 2 coats of stain and poly while in between other tasks. Here’s a shot of that process and we also did one board in because it had a lot of damage from the heater.
The left picture is after the stain and poly and the right picture is after the threshold was installed. And I’ll admit he was right to take the time and do it!
Here’s a close up shot of how Mace cut the threshold to match up to the door jamb and trim.
And here’s a shot once the baseboard went back up (no shoe molding yet), you can’t tell the heater used to be there! We completed the flooring project over the course of 5 days. We were 13 days out from when we started demo, now time for the final push!!
