The Top 5 Interior Design Trends We're Welcoming in 2024

Interior design is an industry that is constantly changing, evolving, and reintroducing design elements. When I went through my design program it was incredibly interesting to learn about history of furnishing styles and and how they have been adapted, modified, and reinvented to the styles we see available today. As we enter a new year I decided to share my top 5 interior design trends that I'm looking forward to seeing more of in 2024.

Quality living room furnishings

1. REDUCING WASTE AND MOVING TOWARDS QUALITY

While it has its place, the fast furniture trend is definitely fading as consumers are wanting to reduce their carbon footprint and realizing the amount of waste created by these types of products. Solidly constructed furniture that can be handed down through generations or passed onto a new owner to enjoy is well worth it in the long run. In addition to helping preserve our environment for future generations, investing in these types of pieces also ensures the artists who are creating the furniture trends can continue to be innovative.

2. ARTISANAL AND HANDCRAFTED PIECES

With an increase in appreciation for craftsmanship, one-of-a-kind pieces are growing in popularity. Unique pieces add interest and create a focal point in a space. As people lean away from cookie cutter spaces in favor of creating something unique to them. Supporting artisans in your community benefits your local economy and ensures that the creative industries continue to produce original pieces.

3. BALANCING MAXIMALISM AND MINIMALISM

Depending on where you get information, you may see that maximalism is gaining traction with bold colors and intricate patterns while others say people are craving simplified spaces. In my opinion, elements of both are on their way out as people are leaning towards a more balanced, liveable style.

4. BOLDER DESIGN CHOICES

For years we have seen a lot of trends that play it safe, from all white kitchens, to white subway tile everywhere, to shades of grey throughout the home. The result has been spaces and homes that can feel cold, sterile, and look like everyone else's. The new trend is making your space unique through bolder design choices and using colors and materials that make a space unique.

5. WATCH FOR CURVES AHEAD

From cabinetry to sofas, curves will be seen more in 2024. Curved lines create softness in a room which leads to an inviting and relaxing space. Using elements like irregularly shaped rugs, free-form tables, or unique lighting fixtures makes spaces feel more organic and less structured.

Trends in any field are there to guide a general direction in which something is developing or changing towards and not every trend works for every person or space. I'm a firm believer in doing something because you love it and not because its a trend.
