Two weekends ago we decided to pull off a basement panel to prepare for a plumbing leak in the baseboard heater before the weather gets cold.
And while he was at it Mace decided to pull back the panels and baseboards by the basement stairs where we had the leak last year.
And guess what he found… mold!! The black on the floor is old floor glue, not mold.
We weren’t really surprised at the mold since when there’s water (and the basement must have had several leaks over the years) there’s a good chance of mold. We found some white mold on the other side of the wall on the floor and overhead floor joists as well as we continued to investigate.
So we started the process of moving all of our stuff out so that the demo crew who’s coming this week can get access to all the paneling that is about to get ripped out… guess Mace is getting his way and there will be all new drywall in the basement instead of painted paneling!
Mold stands no chance against this guy!!
Lucky for us Mace has some very good connections through work and was able to get recommendations about how to best to take care of the mold and if we had to use a professional abate team remove it or if we could do it ourselves. Its a pretty small area that actually has the black mold and its just on the wood paneling and not the cement walls but we should remove it under negative air pressure so the mold spores don’t spread throughout the house. And since we’re doing that we also decided to remove the asbestos floor tiles under the carpet (which we probably wouldn’t have done ourselves). In the interest time we are hiring this job out. In the mean time Mace contained the basement while we planned our attack.
